National Anthems

People sing patriotic songs to show love for their country. Many countries choose one patriotic song to be their national song, or anthem, which people play or sing at important events. Some national anthems are religious. Others are about important battles. Some simply express pride in the nation.

Listen to the UK's national anthem, think about the lyrics.

The Australian National Anthem

Read through the timeline of Australia's history and the way that they chose their national anthem.

There was a choice between two songs: Waltzing Matilda and Song of Australia.

Listen to both of the songs and think about which one you might choose. Think about these questions:
