Writing to persuade

This week, we are going to be writing a speech to persuade people to do something.

With our topic focusing on Australia and New Zealand, we are going to be focusing on the environmental issues that the country is addressing.

Step 1

I would like you to visit the webpage:

and choose an issue that interests you.

Think about the key factors that are causing problems and list them in the planning frame in the resources section. Think about possible solutions that people could do to help solve the issue and write the ideas down in the solutions column.

Step 2

Have a look at the example persuasive speech and identify the key features that are used to make the speech more successful - How is the speech organised?  What language has the author used? What sort of sentences structures? Is the writing formal or informal? Annotate your text and use the features to create a success criteria for your writing.

Step 3

Plan your writing in the planning frame provided. Remember to check you are using features similar to the ones in the example text.

Step 4

Draft your speech. Think about the language and the key features such as rhetorical questions and repetitive language.

Step 5

Edit and up-level your writing - check your spelling and punctuation.

Step 6

Record yourself giving your speech and send in your recording and your final draft to one of the KS2 staff via email. You should use your voice to emphasise the points that you are making and get your message across. Have fun!
