Writing for different audiences

Step 1

This week, I would like you to listen to the Australian story below which is a story aimed at infants set in Australia. Think about how the story tells you this information? What sort of language is used? Are there illustrations? Are there any other techniques that the author has used to let you know that the story is intended for a young audience?

Step 2

I would like you to think about how you could rewrite the story for an older audience. Maybe KS2 or 12 year olds. What would you change? What would you keep the same to get a similar story plot across to the audience? Read through my example of a fairy story that is intended for a slightly older age range that the original and see if you can spot the features.

Step 3

Plan your story based on the original, think about the starter, build up, climax, resolution and ending. Then think about the features and language you could use to make it clear that the story is intended for an older audience.

Step 4

Draft and edit your story, checking for spelling and punctuation - also check that all of your sentences make sense.

Step 5

Word process and illustrate your work, or write it up in your neatest hand writing and illustrate - ensure that the illustrations are also appropriate for the intended audience.
