This week we are going to be revising a spelling rule called ‘W special’. When the letter a follows the /w/ sound it is often pronounced /o/ wash, wand, squash, squad.
Look at the words want, wash, wasp, wand, swallow, squash, swap, squad, swamp, watch. In all of these words, the letter a is pronounced /o/. When /w/ comes before vowels it can affect the pronunciation of the vowel. Go to Letter strings countdown and choose 'W special' wash, wand, squash.
